Fair Districts, Fair Elections: Join LWV Kent to Collect Signatures for Congressional Redistricting Issue

WHAT IS THE FAIR DISTRICTS = FAIR ELECTIONS COALITION?

The Fair Districts = Fair Elections Coalition seeks to reform the way Ohio's Congressional districts are drawn with the goal of prohibiting, or at least reducing, partisan gerrymandering. Additionally, the coalition seeks to increase fairness and accountability in the Congressional map-making process.

The coalition has been urging the state legislature to place Congressional redistricting reform on the ballot, and coalition members are more than half-way to placing an initiative before voters if the legislature refuses to do so.

In November 2015, voters overwhelmingly passed State Issue 1, which was proposed by the legislature. This bipartisan redistricting proposal created a fairer and more transparent process for drawing state legislative districts, but it did not include Congressional districts. The coalition believes that Ohioans deserve fair districts for all of their elected legislators--both state and national. To view the new Congressional districts map, click here.

SIGNATURE COLLECTION

More than 100,000 signatures collected! We are one step closer to putting a proposed constitutional amendment before the voters. Petitions are now available and we need your help getting the necessary signatures to put congressional redistricting reform before the voters.

Because every signature counts and more than 300,000 valid signatures are required to place this issue on the ballot, the Fair Districts coalition is requiring all those who circulate petitions to receive training in doing so.

Email Iris Meltzer Iris.Meltzer@gmail.com with questions about training. The easiest way to get petitions is to sign up for one of the collection dates below at a link you will find at the bottom of the page.

COLLECTION DATES AND TIMES

Our League will be collecting signatures for the Fair Districts = Fair Elections issue at Haymaker Farm Market and other local events throughout the summer and fall. Ideally, each of hour will be staffed by two League members.

Because the rules and guidance for collecting signatures for this position are stringent, we are urging everyone to be trained.

Contact Iris Meltzer know at Iris.Meltzer@gmail.com for training or click this link to go to an online webinar from the League of Women Voters of Ohio.
